Stephen Cuffe has been an editorial photographer and an illustrator for various magazines and several national newspapers. His work has appeared in everything from Punch to websites for international banks – at one time, he was even a sports photographer for The Sun.

“I have been interested in photography and cartoons since I was about ten,” Stephen explains. “But I never dreamt that I would make a living from it one day.

“My work is incredibly – and excitingly – varied because I work with publishers, housing associations and newspapers, as well as brands such as Coke and McDonalds, and each bring their own challenges. I like to find a different ‘look’ for each client, where possible, and avoid a distinctive ‘Cuffe Style’ as it would limit the freedom to do that.”

Stephen works mostly with Photoshop CS and Illustrator (“I’m intending to upgrade to the new versions early next year…”), and recently bought Painter 9, with which he is starting to experiment. His latest projects have involved looking into new, original ways of combining illustration and photography.

2 “These images are from a directory of mental health services, which I illustrated for the NHS. These show a board created in Illustrator, printed off and then photographed with Monopoly pieces. The pieces were then combined in Photoshop, adding figures drawn by me using Illustrator.”
