Four designers who represent today's Japanese graphic design community have designed one poster corresponding to a respective theme. Galeria has presented the main theme poster and the sub-themed posters during the past four weeks.
Galeria presents the concluding themed poster: Joy/Humour.
From this device, I extracted the element for the Congress sub-theme of 'Joy/Humor.' Through trial and error with the aim of capturing the world of joy surrounding people in an everlasting circle, I created this poster: "Depiction of World Joy, Sixteen Faces, Thirty-Two Bodies." By printing the Chinese character for 'Joy' on the face of each person in the circle, I have followed the precedent of one of my trick art predecessors, the Ukiyo-e artist, Kuniyoshi Ichiyusai.
His work refers to a morality tale in which the person whose face has the Chinese character 'Good,' vanquishes the one carrying 'Evil.' For the main colour I used traditional Japanese maroon with a reddish-gold 'Joy,' designed to recall India ink viewed from a certain angle. The VISUALOGUE flyer carrying the information has been torn apart by a playful tug-of-war among the 'joyous mob,' but these visual acrobatics leave a message for the audience: Please put the pieces together again!
